I am back to posting to my blog after a long, dry stretch. It seems a lot longer than three weeks ago that we drove home from Florida. My stepson Brian, his wife Vanessa and their beautiful daughter (and my granddaughter and goddaughter), Brianna arrived from Japan on April 22, and on May 1 they took their wedding vows for a second time at a church wedding and reception for family and friends.

Americans are having a love affair with their dogs, and the dog owning residents of Travelers Rest Resort are no exception. The local kennel club wrapped up their season with a pet parade. The pond known as Lake Margaret is home to a large colony of turtles. They love to bask in the sun on a log that sticks out of the pond. These photos were taken at my local lakes, Lake Margaret and Vanishing Lake. Vanishing is so named because when the water table is low, as it was last year, the lake disappears. The Great Egret was wading in Vanishing Lake before it took flight. The photos were shot using the Nikon 70mm – 300mm zoom lens. I shot at 640 ISO so that I could use a fast shutter speed and capture the bird in flight.

I took the photos of these alligators last week. Eddie took me bike riding on the Van Fleet Trail (rails-to-trail) that runs through the Green Swamp. I was wandering around an antique shop when I came across this stop light. I thought it would make a good photo, but the shop was way too dark for natural light photography. Not having a speed light flash with me, I compensated by cranking up the ISO from 200, the camera's normal setting, all the way up to 3200. The ISO setting measures the sensitivity of the camera's image sensor to light.

The pair of Sandhill Cranes that live at Travelers Rest Resort came out on Friday to enjoy the return of warmer weather. Cranes sometimes stand  on one leg, with the other leg tucked under a wing. I was really lucky to be following the birds with my camera when one of them decided to unfold their right leg from under the wing.

As I said in my last post, it has been cold in Florida. As of today, January 11all of Florida has been affected by an extended cold spell. Most years it gets cold for a day or two, and then warms up, so this cold spell has taken everyone by surprise. Today I took a few photos around our RV resort — winter in Florida! For over five years I have been taking photos of statues, with the idea of making a handmade book of my statuary photos. Maybe this will be the year! At anyrate, these two statue photos were taken on Monday in the Lake Margaret garden at our RV resort. The selection for best photo from the Northport Photo Walk was this photo by Joseph Nuzzo. The photo uses the very popular High Dynamic Range Technique — better know has HDR. With HDR, there is strong detail in the highlights and shadow, and often the colors are intensified. True HDR photographs are made by combining a series of pictures of the same subject, each exposed with different settings.

Last Sunday we were in Connecticuit for a family party at my sister-in-law's. Carol's peonies were in full bloom, and I couldn't resist taking a few photos.With all the shade at our house, our peonies always bloom late, and as of last week they were just about ready to pop. A few photos taken at sunset two weeks ago. We were visiting friends who live on Bayview Avenue in Northport, and down by their dock the seagulls were everywhere. Two photos taken at a KOA campground in Manchester, Tennessee. The squirrels were abundant in the park, up and down all the trees and running all over the place. We are in Tucson (see my travel blog at quinnrv.blogspot.com) and it is a very senic area. The city is surrounded by mountains, and is situated in the Sonora Desert, native habitat for the Saguaro Cactus. I been having a ball photographing cacti. These three photos are only the beginning — more to come!
